The
Beginning
The story of Dr. Humbart (Smokey) Santillo is one of victory
over hardship and success against all odds.
Born
and raised in Lockport, New York (just south of Niagara
Falls) to a carpenter's family, he learned at an early
age the value of hard work.
On
football and track scholarships he earned a Bachelor
of Science degree from Edinboro State Teachers College
in Pennsylvania.
Following graduation from
college, he was overwhelmed by scores of allergies, early
signs of arthritis, anxiety and other complications.
With
the determined spirit that came to characterize all his
future work, he began an ardent search for a solution
to these difficulties.
The
Transition
After
being treated with prescription drugs and allergy shots
for years, he realized his condition was continuing to decline.
After years of searching, he met an Indian
herbalist who introduced him to natural therapeutics. Using his illness as an
inspiration he studied herbology, acupuncture, kinesiology,
homeopathy, naturopathy, metaphysics and nutrition.
After
transitioning to a diet of mostly raw fruits, vegetables,
seeds and nuts, Santillo eliminated the chronic health
problems which troubled him through most of his youth.
Although this diet worked for him, he does not suggest that
others remain on a raw food or cleansing diet for a
long period without the guidance of a professional in the
healing arts. Each person is an individual and has specific
needs. It is difficult for an inexperienced person to
monitor their own condition.
